The term "fine art", coined in 1767, refers to art concerned with beauty, aesthetics, communication and contemplation. It is "art for art's sake", created for enjoyment rather than practical function.
But fine art does have a function, according to recent studies: it makes us feel good. Pleasant emotions are engendered, our spirits enriched and raised. In the science of Neuroaesthetics at Sweden's Ersta Skoendal University, studies show that viewing art lowers blood pressure. Another report, from researchers at the University of Westminster in London, states that after viewing art for 40 minutes, the body's level of the stress hormone cortisol plunges 32%, resulting in a 45% drop in anxiety and irritability. |
For me as an artist, it has always been the act of capturing the image that takes me into a meditative state. When my eye is peering through the viewfinder, the entire world falls away: I am fully present in the moment.
To share my vision and art, and the feelings I experienced at the moment the shutter released, has always been a great joy - but knowing the images I create also uplift the spirit and inspiries happiness in others, is the pinnacle of my life's work.
